Writing Prompt: Argumentative Essay

For this assignment, you will:

1) choose a position on a debatable topic

2) support your position with logical reasons and evidence

3) address counterarguments

To begin, you will need to select a topic.Your topic can be one that is debated on a national level or a smaller, more local issue of concern. Either way, your topic must allow for more than one reasonable answer in order to be considered debatable. Your topic cannot be an argument based on personal taste or an issue that most people agree on.To frame your topic, you will need a research question, claim, and reason(s) to support your claim. Your research question will define the scope and focus of your topic. Your thesis will consist of your claim and reason(s). Your claim must answer your question by presenting your position on the issue. In order to persuade your audience, your claim must be backed by reasons and evidence.

Your purpose is to persuasively argue your position, which will require you to consider who your audience is and what it will take to make them accept the validity of your argument. Understanding your audience will allow you to choose the appropriate rhetorical appeal(s), support any unstated assumption that they may disagree with, and effectively address counterarguments.

You are required to have a counterargument in order to show that you understand the complexity of the issue and have considered alternative views before arriving at your own. The counterargument should fairly present common reasons against your position. The length of your counterargument depends on how controversial your position is or, in other words, how much resistance you anticipate from your audience.
Once you have presented the counterargument, you may choose whether to concede to some points or to refute them all in your rebuttal. Either way, make sure you respond to the counterargument in your rebuttal so that the reader can see why your position is more convincing than others.

Your essay must be well-organized. You are building an argument, so you must consider how to organize your essay in a way that will convince your audience. The audience should be able to easily follow your reasoning as you present and defend your position. Each point you make should somehow help to prove your thesis and bring the reader one step closer to accepting the validity of your argument.
