Three soil borings were performed at the site of a structure and the SPT blow counts at each depth are shown below. (Do not make any corrections to the blow counts.) The soil below the footings consists of a medium grain sand (SP) and water is located at a depth of 5 feet below the ground surface. The preliminary structural plan calls for a 10 foot wide footing located at a depth of 5 feet which must support a load of 300 kips.
Determine:
The allowable soil bearing pressure with respect to shear failure using a factor of safety of 2.5.
The allowable soil bearing pressure with a settlement limitation of 1 inch.
The allowable total load capacity of the footing. Will it be adequate for the design load?
