This table shows the number of homicide victims in the United States in 2001 for four gender/race groups, as well as the total numbers (in thousands) of the U.S. population in those groups.
In a statistics assignment, students are asked to report which race/gender combination had the highest probability of being a homicide victim, and which had the lowest. Which one of the four students' answers is correct?
Adam: The total number of victims is 116,705 for white females-that's the highest, and 17,245 for black males-that's the lowest.
Brittany: Those are total populations in the four groups. You have to look at the numbers of victims: highest for white males at 8,254 and lowest for black females at 1,446.
Carlos: You have to look at conditional probability of being a homicide victim, given that you're in a certain race/gender group. I calculate it to be highest for black males and lowest for white females.
Dominique: Are you supposed to divide or multiply to get conditional probabilities? Because I multiplied and the answer was highest for white males and lowest for black females.
