The Radical and the Republican Essay
This essay will ask you to examine the main themes of this work. Among these are: the differences between the early lives and careers of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, and how they informed their views on slavery and racial equality; how Lincoln and Douglass agreed and/or disagreed about the possibility of using political methods to undermine slavery; the differences between Lincoln the politician and Douglass the reformer; the ways in which each man understood the Civil War to be a war for the destruction of slavery; how each man understood the process of emancipation during the war itself; similarities and differences between each man's concept of freedom.
