Overview: This assignment requires you to summarize the "Gathering Supporting Materials" chapter of our textbook, Invitation to Public Speaking by Cindy L. Griffin (5th Edition). In fitting with the student learning outcome the university desires for this general education course (that you have "an effective understanding and use of written and spoken forms of communication"), the goal is to get you familiarized, through experience, with summarizing written texts. This will also get you some experience citing source material and making a references page citing a source.
Assignment: Summarize the chapter about which you and the members of your group will present on 2/23 In this summary, you'll want to consider and address such matters as:
1. What is the main topic or focus of the chapter? In other words, what specific aspect(s) of public speaking does the author address in your chapter?
2. What are the key/main ideas? (She presents these in a variety of ways for easy recognition, such as with dedicated chapter sections, graphics, and highlighted/bolded type, and also at the end of each chapter for review.)
3. The ideas Griffin discusses that we have discussed in class as well. This ought to help you focus your short paper.
