The Infortunate: The Voyage and Adventures of William Moraley, and Indentured Servant.
by Susan Klepp and Billy G Smith
Throughout Moraley's account, he often describes taking advantage of the benevolence of others, for example, the Quakers. (pg.45) Moraley also seems to be able to move within communities, obtaining free food and shelter, and has access to job opportunities. Why was he not able to establish himself with a secure position where he could put down roots and take advantage of all of the opportunities in America, "the best poor Man's County in the World" (pg. 53) he describes in his memoir? Did Moraley ever really intend to stay in America?
