The telescope in the WIRE spacecraft is is used to make observations at infrared wavelengths of 25 μm. If the detector is not to be swamped by infrared radiation from the telescope housing itself, the telescope must be cooled until the infrared radiation from the instrument is well below the radiation that the astronomer wants to observe. The actual requirement on the temperature is found by working out the total infrared radiation in the frequency band of interest, but let us assume that reducing the temperature of the telescope until its blackbody spectrum peaks below the 25 μm wavelength will be sufficient. Based on this criterion, calculate what the temperature requirement would be for the WIRE telescope.
