The sociotechnical perspective is also referred to by the acronyms TOP or TOM. These stand for Technology, Organization and Management/People. At its simplest, this a perspective meant to be applied to the systems that use tools. In our case those tools are information technology and the systems are digital. Using this perspective allows us to examine systems holistically and as interworking components.

Examples of Technology components are:

PCs

Mobile devices

Networks

Infrastructure

Data

Examples of Organizational components are:

Policy/rules

Procedures

Culture

Partnerships

Examples of People/Management components are:

Management practices

Employee empowerment

Employee training

The success of a system or the acquisition/implementation of a system depends upon matching the solution to the problem or desired outcome.

For example, if your organization is implementing tablet devices for the outside sales staff and a new CRM interface (in order to increase sales and firm up customer relationships) but the sales staff are not trained in a timely manner, then customer relations and sales would suffer (and, the implementation would be considered less than successful). In fact, the implementation might be considered a failure. In this instance, the system solution being implemented did not take the people/management component into account.

It is important to remember that you cannot resolve an organizational problem with technology, technology problem with people, etc.

Initial Post Instructions

In this discussion, consider an information system that isn’t working effectively. Or perhaps, think of an information system acquisition/implementation with which you are familiar. What is the purpose of the system and how does it succeed and how does it fail? How does the system address Technological, Organizational and Management/People needs? How might you address the shortcomings of this system?
