The Social Environment
When the child is admitted to the hospital his social environment is totally changed and all health team members are strangers for him. It is your responsibility as a nurse to make hospital as pleasant as possible. An appropriately handled interaction of admission fosters the child's and family's confidence in the ability of the staff to provide adequate care. Concern and warm approach will help the child and family to cope with the admission in a positive way, and encourages their cooperation. You should give enough time to child and family to ask questions so they do not feel rushed or pressurized by the nurse's busy schedules. The child, especially the school age child and adolescent, should also be given an opportunity to ask questions privately without the parent's presence.
