The Second Industrial Revolution (ca. 1865 – 1920) brought with it tremendous economic growth and intense social change. One of the results of the rapid expansion of the nation’s manufacturing sector were the new conditions that America’s industrial working class confronted in their factories and workshops. Explain what those new conditions were like and how they emerged in this period of intense industrialization, citing examples from at least two specific industries. Then, also discuss two examples of how workers attempted to respond to these changes in order to defend their livelihoods and their dignity as workers.
