Assignment

Objective:

The purpose of this country project assignment is to encourage you to write a paper on a subject of your interest, but within the scope of this course in terms of the time period and region

Note that this is a country project and as such, your paper must focus on one country only; a broad topic that covers the region is fruitless and therefore unacceptable. You must select from one of the topics listed in the above file, POTENTIAL RESEARCH TOPICS. As you will notice, the topics are related to specific countries. If you have difficulties selecting a topic, let me know so I can assist you.

1. You are responsible for finding the sources for your specific topic, but feel free to consult me when necessary. A simple google-scholar search will generate academic articles and books related to your topic. I also strongly encourage you to consult our librarians, especially Professor David Lincove. They will help you narrow your research topic, in addition to guiding you to find research materials.

2. I discourage you from using Wikipedia since many of its articles are not reviewed by specialists, and are editable. However, you can use it as a starting point, and assess whether the sources of their articles (usually found at the bottom of the article) are useful for your topic.

3. You MUST NOT use a private blog or a commercial website (.com), except reputable newspapers and journals. Consult your grader for assistant. This restriction is due to the fact that private blogs and commercial websites tend to be opinionated. We want you to develop diverse perspectives in this assignment.

4. You must consult at least four academic sources, i.e. journals and books. If you use only non-academic online sources, you will earn a lower grade than you deserve. You can search jstor org or project muse for academic articles that relate to your topic. The librarians are always willing to help you find sources. Professor Lincove for example can help you locate primary sources in different data bases.

Specific Instructions

(i) The paper should be between 6-8 pages, double-spaced. A paper shorter than 6 pages will be considered too short.

(ii) You must provide references in parenthesis (David 2007: 23). This means David's article or book published in 2007, page 23). You must cite books and articles in this format consistently. You must similarly cite all the websites you consult in the following format: countrystudy.us. Accessed May 30, 2016.

(iii) Include a reference page, which will not count toward the required pages of the assignment. Let your grader help you if you do not know how to prepare a bibliography/reference page.

(iv) Use 12 points fonts only and do not adjust the preset margins of your word processing software.

(v) Include a cover page with your name, title of the paper, and instructor's name. The cover page will not count toward the page requirements. Do not begin your paper on the cover- page.

(vi) Check your grammar and spellings. Your grade will be determined by both content and style (grammar, organization, word choices, a limited number of passive voices, and clarity of your argument). If you expect an A in this assignment your paper must be clean and professional, in addition to other requirements mentioned above, and submitting your work before the deadline.

(vii) In this very short paper, I discourage from using more than three bloc quotes and each of these must not exceed five lines. Moreover, we discourage you from too many quotations. Please paraphrase instead and provide references for all information and words that are not yours. Paraphrasing a text does not mean you don't have to cite your sources, and failure to cite your sources constitutes plagiarism, even if it is just a phrase. If you use a phrase that you borrowed from another source, place the phrase in quotation marks and provide the reference. You will earn a lower letter grade if your quotations exceed 15% of the total number of words in your paper. You can use the word count feature of your software to determine if you have over quoted. Note that submitting a paper or part of a paper you had submitted in another class constitutes academic misconduct since that assignment had been graded and credited in another class. Contact the instructor if you intend to use part of a paper you have written and have earned a grade for it in another class.

(viii) Submit your paper first for originality check and retrieve it if the originality check exceeds 15%. That means either you have borrowed too much from external sources without attribution, or you have too many quotations. Both are unacceptable. We want to assess your writing and not the works of others.

(ix) Do not attempt to download anything from the internet without acceptable attribution as this will be detected and such behavior will be reported to the appropriate authorities as required by University rules regarding Academic Misconduct (see the syllabus). If you are having difficulties or you are not sure of what needs to be cited, please CONTACT ME, YOUR GRADER, AND OR THE WRITING CENTER BEFORE SUBMITTING THE ASSIGNMENT. I will not defend you if you were caught cheating. If you are not sure of something, please consult your grader or the instructor to be certain you will not be inadvertently accused of cheating.
