A town is considering building a new water treatment facility to treat 32 mgd of river water. The plant will be designed with a rapid mix unit followed by flocculation and sedimentation basin. The water source has an average winter water temperature of 40 and an average summer water temperature of 70oF. The facility will be using alum at dose of 14 mg/L and there is sufficient alkalinity present to ensure there is not a significant pH change during coagulation. It has been identified that charge neutralization is the dominant mechanism for coagulation. The plant manager would like to make sure that there is sufficient.storage on-site for a 2-3 week supply of the concentrated alum solution. it will be up to you to decide how many units you would like to use and the dimensions of each. At a minimum, you need to specify the physical dimensions and layout for this portion of the facility (rapid mix, flocculation, sedimentation), identify specifications for required equipment (you do not need to select a specific motor but you should describe the minimum requirements), and specify required chemicals (i.e., storage and daily use).
