The Job Characteristics Model is an excellent way to get managers to think about designing jobs that are motivating, as opposed to getting managers to think about how to motivate people. Think about a former or current job and describe it in terms of the five core job characteristics. Then describe the job’s “motivating potential.” If any of the characteristics are low in “motivating potential,” describe how you would redesign that aspect of the job to make it more intrinsically motivating.
