The groundwork for understanding primate behavior was set in the previous chapter where you learned from the lecture something about the group structure of various non-human primates, and read a brief statement on aggression, cooperation and learning. This chapter explores the cultural aspect of primates in more depth.
The text introduces the concepts by telling us that there is a feedback mechanism between the social and environmental elements and the development of intelligent behavior. In other words, the brain was stimulated resulting in creative (intelligent) adaptations and complex behavior patterns. Thus, our focus in this chapter is to examine primates for answers to questions about the development of culture, the hallmark of human adaptive capabilities.
