The extent of a hazardous area depends on the rate of release, ventilation conditions, and fluid properties and is defined by the relevant regional or country standards.
The potential for large releases in operational situations (e.g. process vents) needs to be assessed separately. Dispersion analysis is used to determine the size of the hazardous zone. Drain system vents also need to be considered with respect to the location of ignition sources.
