The conflict between too hot and too cold or too slow and too fast can be resolved using don't care states.
Don't care states are used when
i) the state of the output is not important (can be either 0 or 1
ii) the inputs never occur e.g. both too slow and too fast.
Don't care states are represented by an X in truth tables and Karnaugh maps.
On K-maps don't care states are grouped with 1's if this allows larger groups or a smaller number of groups to be formed.
