The completion of this assignment will entail the design of the structural fire protection for a simple warehouse building. This assignment is to take place out of class and is open book and notes. However, under NO circumstances are you to discuss this project with other students (or anyone for that matter) in the class. Any student caught violating this policy will be immediately issued a "0" for the assignment.
You will provide a separate engineering calculation and all pertinent reference data (i.e. manufacturer spec sheets, UL designs, etc.) for each of the following questions. Place all calculations in a report folder in a logical order. Provide a table of contents as well.
1. Concerning the wall between the office area and the manufacturing area, answer the following questions:
a. Using NFPA 1, what is the required separation between the office area and the manufacturing area? Assume the manufacturing area is general purpose industrial.
b. Specify a fire wall of appropriate resistance which utilizes masonry. Provide a construction detail of how it is to be constructed. Please note this is a load bearing wall.
c. Specify a fire wall of appropriate resistance which utilizes gypsum wallboard over metal studs. Provide a construction detail of how it is to be constructed. Please note this is a load bearing wall.
2. Concerning the wall between the office area and the manufacturing area, answer the following questions:
a. Specify a fire door for use in question 1b.
b. Specify a fire door for use in question 1c.
3. The office area is required to have a one hour protection on all of its W8x18 columns. Specify:
a. Specify board protection using Type X gypsum wallboard to provide this level of protection.
b. Specify spray fire resistant material. You may not use the specification sheets provided in class for this problem.
4. The manufacturing area is required to have a minimum of 2 hours of protection on all structural members. The columns are W 12x45. Assume you are using normal weight concrete with the reentrant spaces filled. Provide a detail on the required thickness of concrete encasement to provide this level of protection.
5. The roof of the building will be restrained steel bar joists supporting metal rook decking with a cold applied roofing material. Provide a detail of a design that can be used for the roof construction and make sure to select the appropriate spray applied material and calculate the required thickness.
