THERMOFLUIDS AND MECHANICAL SYSTEMS ASSIGNMENT -

ANSWER ALL FOUR QUESTIONS.

Unless otherwise stated, all symbols carry their usual meaning.

Q1. (a) Draw the Temperature-Volume diagram for the heating and phase change process of water at a constant pressure of 1 atm.

Explain the following five terms: Subcooled Liquid, Saturated Liquid, Saturated Vapour, Superheated Vapour, and Quality.

(b) Determine the missing properties and the phase description in Table Q1 below for water, using the property tables given in Appendix Q1.

Provide full explanations for your answers.

DATA: Saturated liquid-vapour mixture: h = hf + x hfg

Subcooled liquid: h = hf @ T + vf @ T (P - Psat)

Q2. The manometer shown in Figure Q2 contains water and kerosene. With both tubes open to the atmosphere, the free-surface elevations differ by H0 = 20 mm. The density of kerosene is 820 kg/m3.

(a) Find the height of column of kerosene.

(b) Determine the elevation difference when a pressure of 98.0 Pa (gauge) is applied to the right tube.

Q3. In the simply supported beam shown in Figure Q3:

(a) Calculate the support reaction forces.

(b) Draw the shear and bending moment diagrams.

(c) Find the location and magnitude of maximum bending moment.

(d) The beam has a rectangular cross section as shown in Figure Q3. Determine the maximum tensile and compressive bending stresses.

Q4. A car with a mass of 1200 kg reaches a speed of 45 km/h from rest over a distance of 50 m up a ramp of 8o with a constant acceleration.

The centre of mass of the car is 1.4 m from the front wheels, 1.6 m from the rear wheels and 0.6 m above the surface of the road. The car is rear wheel drive and the coefficient of friction between the tires and the road is at least 0.8. Assume g=9.81 ms-2.

(a) Draw the free body diagram of the car.

(b) Calculate the acceleration of the car.

(c) Calculate the friction force under the rear driving wheel.

(d) Calculate the normal force under each pair of wheels. Does the slippage occur?
