Tests of phenol - Hydrocarbon
(a) Aqueous solution of phenol gives a violet colouration with a drop of ferric chloride.
(b) Aqueous solution of phenol gives a white precipitate of 2, 4, 6-tribromophenol with bromine water.
(c) Phenol generates Liebermann's nitroso reaction.
(d) Phenol combines along with phthalic anhydride in presence of conc. to make phenolphthalein that gives pink colour with alkali, and required as an indicator.
(e) Along with sodium hypochlorite and ammonia, phenol gives blue colour.
