Tere is a certain debate taking place in the media today

There is a certain debate taking place in the media today. Last night Donald Trump gave his acceptance speech at the Republican national convention. In that speech he depicted the United States as plagued with violence and chaos--very much in line with the comments above. But then this morning President Obama and Democrat pundits made the point that statistically crime, even violent crime, is down; unemployment is relatively low; and the stock market is on a nice run. Typically these technical features of the political economy would make people feel secure and confident in the government. There is a disconnect that doesn't follow the historical pattern. Obviously, there are a good number of people in our class that certainly do not feel secure. If crime is in fact down, how can fear be so prevalent? How do we get such a disconnect?
