Reword. It was on a cool night shift, and I had just resumed for work when I was summoned to the nursing administrative office to be informed that the charge nurse for my night shift had an accident on her way to work and I would need to take over the charge of the unit that night. The charge nurse had become a patient in another unit of the hospital and the role of charge nurse was suddenly transferred to me. It was a role I was not prepared for because my intention that night as I resumed work was to take care of tasks assigned tome, little did I know that I would be the person assigning tasks. I did a brief situation analysis of the cases in th unit, the staff strength, and the resources available, then I took charge of the unit that night using a combination of situational and transactional leadership styles and we had a very successful night shift.
