1. Go to company filings with the SEC using the following link -
https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html
2. Search on your favorite public company. Here is a screen shot for my favorite company, Starbucks (SBUX is their ticker):
3. The following will pop up for your favorite company:
4. Click on the "Interactive Data" for the company's 10K report. 5. The following will pop up:
6. Click on "Notes Tables".
7. Explore each of the disclosures and click on the item such as "Components of Inventories" and the below will be displayed. Expand References by clicking the "+". Please note that you can click on any item on this page and a definition, reference, and details will pop up.
8. The FASB Codification Reference will pop up:
9. Log in to the FASB Codification and find the reference.
10. Assignment part a: Take (1) a screen shot of the FASB codification reference and (2) the FASB Codification pages both similar to the above. Repeat this process 9 more times. You will look up a total of 10 items. Please explore all the categories, such as financial statements, notes to financial statements, etc.!
11. Assignment part b - Summarize your findings. Did you find anything interesting or unusual? How is this tool useful to investors? How is this useful to analysts? How do you see yourself using this tool in the future?
