Journal Assignment
Consider the most passionate, compelling and/or interesting argument you have heard the last few months. Summarize the argument in the first one or two paragraphs, mentioning who was engaged in the discussion, what the subject was, and key points of each side of the argument. Next, offer your opinion with regard to whom you believe offered the best argument and explain why you think one person's argument was more convincing. The more detailed your journal is, the better. No secondary sources are needed for this assignment.
Format
Format the assignment in MLA style. If typed, the journal should consist of 1 to 1 ½ pages. Arrange the page according to the guideline mentioned below:
- One inch margins on all sides
- Double space the entire page(s)
- Place a page header (your last name and the page number) in the upper right hand corner of the page, using the toolbar to accomplish this. So, begin by selecting "Insert" on the tool- bar. Then, select "Page Number," followed by "Top of Page." Next, select "Plain Number 3." Type your last name where you see the blinking cursor (which is positioned next to the number 1 at the top right of the page). Tap the space bar to create a space between your last name and the number 1. Finally, return to the toolbar and click "Close Header and Footer." The page header should auto-feed to subsequent pages.
- Return to the page and place the blinking cursor to the upper most point on the page (which will be 1 inch from the top of the page on the left-hand side.) There, enter your first and last name. On the second line, enter my name (example: Henderson or Dr. Henderson). Next, place the course (example: ENGL 1020-042 or ENGL 1020-052, depending on your section number), followed by the date you will submit the assignment, which should be 24 August 2016.
- Center the title of your journal on the next double-spaced line. (Note: the title should not be Journal 1. Select a title that reflects the main point of your journal.)
- One double space beneath the title, indent the first sentence 1 tab, and begin typing your first paragraph. Remember to indent the first sentence of each subsequent paragraph.
- Spell check the journal before submitting it.
- If you handwrite this assignment, your writing must be legible, and you should mimic a double-spaced, typed page by writing on a line then skipping a line, and so on. If handwritten, the journal should be 2 to 2 1/2 pages long, or a front and back of one page plus no more than half of another page. Remember: essay drafts and essay revisions may not be handwritten.
