As for a fact Homer does pay close attention to how guests talk to their hosts. There are several examples of this in books 3-7. In The Odyssey,  Book 4 shows an example of how Homer describes how one character talks to another character. An example of this was when Menelaus was very angry because there were strangers who came to his home. In the text, it was stated that "Telemachus and the son of Nestor stayed their horses at the gate, whereon Eteoneus servant to Menelaus came out, and as soon as he saw them ran hurrying back into the house to tell his Master. He went close up to him and said, "Menelaus, there are some strangers come here, two men, who look like sons of Jove. What are we to do? Shall we take their horses out, or tell them to find friends elsewhere as they best can?" Which was what led Menelaus to become angry. Where he then said, "Eteoneus, son of Boethous, you never used to be a fool, but now you talk like a simpleton. Take their horses out, of course, and show the strangers in that they may have supper; you and I have staid often enough at other people's houses before we got back here, where heaven grant that we may rest in peace henceforward." Homer  describes the interaction in this way so that the people reading can understand why Menelaus was so angry. Which was because the Eteoneus servant "never used to be a fool, but now you talk like a simpleton."(Homer) This was because Menelaus wanted the strangers to come to have supper.

After reading and getting the understanding of why Menelaus was angry it makes complete sense that he would be angry since he has stayed at other people's houses before he got to where he was so he did not understand why Eteoneus the son of Boethous informed him about the strangers at his house. Homer is able to let the readers understand this because he included how both Eteoneus, son of Boethous and Menelaus, have stayed at other people's houses several times. It made it seem as if Eteoneus, son of Boethous was trying to take charge and get the strangers in "trouble." Although Menelaus understands the stranger's position it does not go as Eteoneus would have planned for it too. Because it seems obvious that these were Eteoneus true intentions. While Menelaus intended to be helpful.

There have been so many situations where I had to talk with someone in a similar way.  Which was when I was babysitting my little cousin who did not know any better and did not want to include my other little cousin in a game we were playing. So I told both of them that they should not be like that with each other, especially since we are all family. It made me feel good because I was able to make them understand that they are family too. Although it also made me feel disappointed because I did not understand why they felt that way toward each other especially since they are around the same age.
