Styrene rubber (GR-S or Buna-S or SBR or Ameripol): Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) is prepared by the copolymerization of butadiene (75%) and styrene (25%) in an emulsion styrene at in the presence of catalyst like Cunene hydro peroxide and p-methane hydro peroxide. When the emulsion polymerization is done at low temperature (-18 to 5 degree centigrade) in the presence of redox catalyst, than the resultant SBR is known as "cold rubber".
Properties: SBR has high abrasion resistance, high load bearing capacity, low oxidation resistance. It swells in oils and solvents and has resilience. Vulcanized and compounded cold rubber has a greater tensile strength and greater abrasion resistance than the SBR or natural rubbers.
Uses: SBR is used in motor tyres, shoe soles, gas kits, foot wear components, insulation of wire and cables, carpet backing, adhesives etc.
