HIGHWAY DESIGN PROJECT

The objective of this project is for students to apply the principles and techniques covered in VAC2072 to design in detail a section of major highway about 30km north-west of Melbourne to specified design standards. The use of computer aided techniques and drawing, including the use of CivilCad or similar, is recommended where possible. Nominated students will also be required to report orally on various aspects of the design throughout the design process. Students will work in design teams of three and teams must be finalised by tutorial time of week

Introduction and alignment considerations and first stage cross-section, Environmental impact, land acquisition. Horizontal alignment, Vertical alignment. Cross section, Drainage considerations, earthwork quantities. Appropriate pavement, Final drawings and report.

Students are to design a four lane, divided two way road between a given point near the intersection of Riddell Rd/Dalrymple Rd. Sunbury and a given point on Reservoir Rd about 2.5km south of the starting point as shown on the attached map. Each team will be given a nominated starting point and end point. Assume your starting point has local grid coordinates
E 5000.00, N 5000.00. Give your starting point CH1000.00. The alignment should aim to minimise land severance costs. Prepare a drainage strategy indicating culvert and swale locations and areas for nominated environmental treatment. Specific expected traffic loadings will be given to each design team.
The design speed of the road is 110km/h and will have a typical cross section as follows:

Austroads design standards with VicRoads modifications are to be followed. Essential tables/charts in the Austroads Design Guides are accessible to students via the VU Library database. (It is preferable, for this design, that transition curves are not used. Therefore use large radii and calculate the superelevation required on the curves, but do not design the superelevation development).
Students are to design the horizontal and vertical alignments including determination of coordinates of key intersection points and calculation of levels at 50.000m chainages. The amount of earthworks should be kept as low as possible and both horizontal and vertical alignment aim to balance cut and fill earthwork quantities.
Ten cross sections at significant points (e.g. deep cuts, high fills, important locations etc) are to be drawn between CH 1000.000 and the end of the road and the road reserve width is to be determined. A drainage strategy (including environmental treatment) for the road and its immediate surrounds is required (but not designed in detail). The use of CivilCad or similar is encouraged if possible.
Students must submit:
1. A3 size Horizontal alignment drawing at scale 1:5000 or as appropriate with existing contours shown. Show coordinates of all intersection points and curve radii and the superelevation required. Calculate the final bearing of your road and its length. Horizontal alignment should be shown as a centreline with the outer edges of the road shoulders and approximate batter lines and proposed road reserve boundary. Show and label chainage "ticks" at 100m intervals.
2. Vertical alignment drawing at scale H 1:5000 , V 1:500 (or as appropriate) including listing of NSL at the centre line and design level at the centre line at 50m intervals. Indicate the length of all vertical curves on the drawing and show details (CH and RL) of vertical intersection points. Tabulate all calculations.
3. Total of 10 cross sections at CH1200.000, CH 1500.000, plus at other significant points including the CH with the largest road reserve required. The road reserve width is to be taken as the distance from toe/top of batter on one side to toe/top of batter on the other side plus 5m each side for maintenance. Show the road reserve on the cross sections.
4. All calculations (including statement of any assumptions) of alignment total earthwork quantities (cut and fill) between the start (CH 1000.00) and the final Chainage.
5. A statement (max one page) as to how this total length of road should be drained. A sketch showing drains, pits, pipe and treatment locations should be included. Detail drainage design (pit, pipe size and levels) is not required.
6. A statement and sketches where appropriate (max one page) outlining how the road will affect the existing environment including land acquisition. Note the details of any bridges required but do not perform any structural bridge designs.
7. Calculations and design of pavement for a design period of 25 years.
