Teaching the Indigenous Aboriginal child:
Place yourself as a teacher in a community There is an Indigenous (Aboriginal) child in your class. Who is this child? How would you teach this child in a way that acknowledges and develops his/her strengths? Include the following:
• Explore how specific Indigenous cultural foundations, the experiences of history and contemporary situations have contributed to the creation of this ‘child’,
• Explain the strengths that the Indigenous child inherits from this community and cultural background,
• Articulate your position as a teacher in relation to the child and the community, and acknowledge any cultural interplay,
• Consider the implications of differences in Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives on education for your teaching practice,
• Discuss methods of teaching and interaction that you would use to teach this child, in this community, effectively.
