Q1. How could Robert have managed this situation differently?

Robert is a newly registered nurse, and according to Chang and Daly (2020), inexperienced nurses need to be aware of their limitations, be confident in seeking advice and assistance, and reflect on their practice. Robert could have managed this situation differently by being compassionate and acknowledging Mrs Tran's daughter's concerns. Demonstrating compassionate care and using emotional intelligence can assist with the development of a therapeutic relationship, building trust and confidence between the nurse and patient or family (Codier & Codier, 2017). Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise and manage one's own emotions and those of others (Codier & Codier, 2017). Robert could have used his emotional intelligence to recognise the daughter's distress and provided her with assurances that he would assist her with the showering within a given timeframe or reassure her that he would get someone else to assist her straight away. Robert's communication may have made her feel that her mother was less important than the other patient which would have prevented her from trusting him in providing appropriate care for her mother.

Q2. What other resources could Robert have considered using to support himself and Mrs Trans's daughter?

Chang and Daly (2020) state that newly registered nurses should not work as individuals but as part of the team; accepting and offering help and assistance from colleagues to actively improve clinical practice and provide safe, quality care. Robert was working with another nurse who was on her tea break, he could have asked her to come and assist him briefly, whilst he administered the medication and then encourage her to go back on her break afterwards. Alternatively, he could have sought out an assistant in nursing staff to initiate the showering process for him. Activities and priorities in nursing need to be flexible and adaptable to cope with developing situations (Chang & Daly, 2020). Robert needs to utilise resources available to him, to ensure he can care for all his patients holistically. Other resources he could utilise are other nurses working on the ward. He needs to know when to seek assistance to promote patient-centred care and offer his assistance in return to develop an effective relationship with his colleagues
