Description of Assignment: Building on your work together to research the scope and effects of the problem you will now engage in research to explore the causes of the problem and promising strategies to resolve the problem. You will utilize trusted sources to collect data and other information on the problem. Your final product for this assignment will be an Infographic developed using the online platform Piktochart that represents what you have learned. Infographics will be displayed in class on 11/5 and each group will have time to explain their graphic and answer questions.
Causes of the Problem: When investigating the causes of a specific social problem, we are attempting to answer the basic question: why does this problem exist? What sequence of events lead to the problem? What conditions allow the problem to occur and persist? For example, if we are researching the problem of youth homelessness, we want to “think like an ecosystem” and understand as best we can what causes youth to end up on the streets? It could be individual causes such as a mental health issue. It could be a family issue such as neglect or abuse. It could be related to economic factors such as poverty, or systemic issues related to lack of affordable housing. What does the research say?
Strategies to address the Problem: When investigating possible strategies to address a specific social problem we are asking the basic question: what can be done? What does the research say are promising practices for preventing, reducing, or eliminating the problem? What examples of effective solutions can you highlight? Is there evidence that these solutions actually work? Based on your research, what actions would you recommend to address the root causes of the problem?
Assessment: Your work will be graded on how well your research explains the casues and strategies to address your specific social problem with appropirate citations as well as how clearly and effectively you organize and communicate this information using the infographic.
