statistical critical thinking and application

Statistical Critical Thinking and Application Skills

I. Read the Nature article, Sustainable Trophy Hunting of African Lions.

2. Supplementary materials

a. A Hunter's Guide to Aging Lions in Eastern and Southern Africa.

b. TigerTag Game website, tag tigers and collect data

c. Dataset used in class demo is also available online.

3. Answer the following questions.

a) What statistical method do they use to study the relationship between nose blackness and age?

b) Is it the same as the same as the model you just learned in class? If not, what is the difference?

c) What is the model to predict the age? Using the model, compute/predict age of the lion if the proportion of nose blackness is 0.55? (hint, the excel function of arcsin is ASIN)

d) Try out the Tigerstat game online and collect your sample, use stat503 for the ClassName.

e) Fit the data with regression first without transformation, then with arcsin(x) transformation, on both cases,

- Report the model on both cases.

- Show the residual plot.

- Compare and select the better model.

- With your selected model, test whether the impact of the (transformed) explanatory variable significantly greater than 0? What is the p-value?

Discuss any challenges in the analysis. Can you think of another ways to do the regression analysis?
