State Highways:

These are trunk or arterial roads of a state connecting the National Highways of adjacent states and linking the district headquarters and important cities within the state.

District Roads

These are roads traversing within a district, serving areas of production and markets, connecting these with National and State Highways. They are further divided into two classes as:

(a)        Major District Roads (MDR) for higher order of traffic.

(b)       Other District Roads (ODR) for lower order of traffic.

Village Roads (VR)

These are roads connecting village with each other or to the nearest market centre, District Road, National or State Highway.

The Other District Roads (ODR) and Village Roads (VR) are often grouped together and termed as 'Rural Roads'.

  • know highway planning and administration in India,
  • understand the survey, investigations and highway alignment, and
  • design the various geometric designs of roads with their cross-sectional elements.
