This assignment requires you to produce a 1000-word report detailing results from a stakeholder mapping process using the stakeholder identification framework of Preble (2005).
To begin with, you are to select a recent newspaper article that focuses on a serious problem or issue facing an organization. Please ensure that the issue presented in the newspaper article poses a significant threat or growth opportunity to the focal organisation. The organisation may be public, private, not-for-profit etc., it may also be a firm of any size, however note that you will likely find more information about firms of a larger size.
Your report should begin with a description of the focal organisation, as well as a brief description of the issue facing the organisation. It is important that you focus primarily on how the issue may threaten the existence or growth of the firm. This section should be approximately 200 words in length.
You are then required to undertake four of Preble’s (2005) six steps for stakeholder management. The first four steps involve the following processes:
Identify all stakeholders related to the issue facing the organisation. Note whether they are Primary, Public or Secondary. (In your report this should present as a diagram/figure mapping the stakeholders and a one-paragraph summary outlining their features).
Identify the general nature of each’s stakeholder’s claims and power implications pertaining to the issue facing the focal organization. In this section you will classify each stakeholder according to their ‘equity, economic, influences.’ You may like to present this section as a table, followed by a two paragraph discussion examining the claims of pertinent stakeholders.
Determine the performance gaps that present between the focal organisation and each identified stakeholder pertaining to the issue. As part of this you need to define the stakeholder’s expectations, identify where current shortfalls in stakeholder interacts are occurring, and explore the influence strategies that the stakeholders have. This section may be presented as a series of paragraphs.
Prioritise stakeholder demands by identifying the salience of each stakeholder (power, legitimacy and urgency), and identify the strategic importance of each stakeholder.
You may like to present this section as a table, followed by a discussion over several paragraphs.
Conclude your report by very briefly listing possible actions that the organisation should take to resolve the issue and improve stakeholder relationships. These suggestions will inform your final assessment item.
