Social Processes Article Review
For this assignment you will be reading a sociological article and comparing it to an article from the popular press. Do not answer the following in point form. Complete sentences and paragraphs are required.
PART A -
You will first choose an article from The Canadian Review of Sociology. You can use another journal if you wish, but be sure that it is a sociological journal, and it is best to check with me first. After reading the article write a brief report detailing the following:
1) What is the author arguing? This is known as the thesis statement. This assignment is not what the article is "about"; it is what the author is trying to convince you of.
2) What is the author's methodology? How does the author support her or his argument?
3) Which of theoretical perspectives from class best captures the overall thrust of the article?
PART B -
Find another article that touches on this topic from a non-scholarly/non-academic perspective. This could be a newspaper report, an article on a website, an article in a magazine, or some other popular source. It does not need to be on the exact same subject matter, but similar enough to allow for a comparison. Explain how the popular article differs from the scholarly article noted above in terms of structure and content.
Your paper must include in-text citations and a reference section. We will use ASA style for this assignment: see Blackboard for Handout.
When you cite the textbook, place it in a reference section. You can use quotations but do not use extensive amounts of text from the article. Rather, blend your quotations into sentences for emphasis. You do not need a title page or title (Article Review Assignment is fine), but you do need a Reference section with a reference for your article.
