Silver point:
- Uses of silver point: ease of handing and placement, ductility, radiopacity, and have some antibacterial activity.
- Lack of acceptable 3D seal of the canal system.
- Produce a plug in the apical constriction while not sealing the accessory canals.
- Corrode over time contact with tissue fluids and certain chemicals used in endodontics including sodium hypochlorite and some sealers.
- Corrosion occurs mainly at the apical and coronal portions result in loss of apical seal.
- Cytotoxicity of corrosion product corrosion such as silver sulfide, silver sulfate, silver carbonate, and silver amine hydrate.
Silver point removal:
Easy retrieval of silver point
- Extended point within pulp chamber.
- Sealing:
- Type of cement
- Apical retention
- Chronic leakage
- Corrosion
- Imbedded within coronal restoration
