The final project in ENG 1B is to create an argumentative research paper in which you prove your ability to thoroughly analyze a text by using quotes and defending your opinions of the novel's major and minor themes. You must prove your understanding of how literary devices like plot, characterization, setting, connotation, metaphor, simile, symbolization, etc. contribute to a theme in literature.
You must prove your ability to thoroughly analyze a text by using direct quotes and defending your opinions of the novel's major and minor themes.
Your paper must focus on either "The Painted Bird" or "Go Ask Alice." The goal is to convince readers to agree with your interpretation and opinions of the book. To help prove your analysis, you must include at least five (5) additional sources. The paper must be 1,000 - 1,200 words (not including the reference list) and set up in MLA format.
Though you are encouraged to come up with your own analytical response, I have listed some topics that you may select from to form your paper:
1. Is this fiction or non-fiction? Does it matter?
2. What does this book teach us about humanity and/or the human condition?
3. Should young readers be required to read this piece?
4. How does this novel teach us about the dark side of humanity?
5. Is this a "good" piece of writing? Should it be considered a "classic?"
Remember that whatever angle you chose to take, your paper must include a discussion of the major and minor themes and the literary devices used in the novel.
