Problem: What do young people need to know to become competent, responsible, satisfied adults? Which of these should be the responsibility of the school system to teach them? Should high schools be limited to traditional academic subjects like English, math, science, and social studies, or should they play a broader role in preparing young people for adulthood by providing instruction more directly relevant to work, family, leisure, and citizenship? Which courses should be required and which should be electives?
