Should important societal issues be determined by the

Discussion Forum

The Supreme Court has considered cases related to a variety of issues considered important in American society including civil liberties, civil rights, and the constitutionality of legislation.

Some of these issues have been on the subjects of gun rights/control, affirmative action, abortion, same sex marriage and the Affordable Health Care Act to mention a few past notable examples. Explore PBS's Supreme Court Watch website .

This site has good information both on the Supreme Court and recent cases. Debate with your classmates whether the Supreme Court is the appropriate institution to resolve the issues - you must pick one issue in particular to discuss.

Should important societal issues be determined by the courts (and thus unelected judges) or Congress? Is the issue that you selected one that should be left to the states?

Each student will create one discussion and respond to at least two classmates' posts.
