My first contact with global health was not as a provider but as a recipient. I was raised in Armenia, while it was part of the Soviet Union. In 1988 an earthquake devastated my hometown, causing massive destruction and wiping out a third of the population. It left my family and me without a home and later on forced us to become refugees in Ukraine. It was the first time foreigners had been allowed to USSR and into my hometown and the first time I saw a humanitarian response in action. I was surprised at their willingness and desire to help my people without even knowing us. I was only 12, but I promised myself that like them, I would pursue medicine and contribute to the health of my people. Organizations such as Red Cross, Caritas, USAIS, World Vision, WHO and LDS Charities play a key role in providing first response and continuous supports to devastated communities.
