Problem
What is achievement? The dictionary defines it as the act of achieving something, or a result gained by effort. Let's take it a step further and consider what achievement is to various cultures. Is achievement, for example, something that individual people achieve on their own? Or is achievement something that a group of people achieve together? And can achievement only be gained at someone else's expense?
Let's not let this discussion get too confused. Share what you think when you think of achievement. There is no right or wrong answer. Then, tell me if people you know see achievement the same way you see achievement. Do you think that in your culture there is an expectation that you achieve in a certain way?
Instructions: Take a moment to reflect on what constitutes success and achievement in American culture. Now, author a new post and discuss whether you believe the American emphasis on competition encourages or discourages achievement. What factors went into your decision?
