Question:
From a case study in policy development, I learned that taxation plays an important role in shaping public health by changing human behavior and understanding how the funds can have positive external influences. Taxing can be useful in promoting public health, making healthier choices, also being resourceful in areas like education and healthcare. Philadelphia's successful path to passing a soda tax proved to be overall benefiting health by not consuming sugary drinks which can cause health-related issues and more importantly generating revenue for the city's future for the greater good. In Philadelphia, the tax on sugary drinks made significant revenue and Prekindergarten was funded so the parents had reliable childcare and they worked with good due diligence without stressing to raise their children. It all became possible when Mayor Kenny of Philadelphia made the beverage tax by both lobbying against the tax and then advocating for it from a public health perspective. Although lobbying and advocacy may be two different activities, they are related to public policy development and implementation. Lobbying and advocacy were pursued to form public policy while lobbying may seem more targeted in its course of interaction with policymakers, advocacy works on a bigger platform to connect
