Self Help Group:
The first and perhaps the most influential of substance abuse rehabilitation is Self Help Group. The self help programme was founded in 1935 by two men, Dr. Bob, a surgeon by profession and Bill. W, a New York stockbroker. These nien were unable to take help for their suffering from alcoholism from the health professionals. They found that by sharing their life experiences with each other and identifying with each other in their common problems with alcohol they were able to overcome their compulsion to drink.
In the self help group Alcoholic Anonymous (A.A.) group, Narcotic Anonymous (N.A.) group are popular, and found all over from recovering addicts. There are also Cocaine Anofiymous (C.A.) and Adult Children of Alcoholics (A.C.O.H.) are also developed.
The Twelve Steps of Alcoholic Anonymous
I) Admitted we were powerless over alcohol that our life had become unmanageable.
2) Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanily.
3) Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.
4) Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5) Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being to exact nature of our wrongs.
6). We're entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7) Humbly asked Him to remove all our shortcomings.
8) Made a list of all persons we hadhmed, and willing to make amends to them all.
9) Made direct amends to such people wherever possible and accept when to do so would injure them or others.
10) Continue to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admit it.
11) Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious, contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and power to carry that out.
12) Having had a spiritual experience as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
