In this assessment item we want you to select a piece of audioand produce a visually engaging interpretation of the audio in moving text, rendered as video (a technique you can search for on YouTube or Vimeo called "kinetic typography"). You can only use text for this assignment - you are not allowed to use images or video. However, you are permitted to use the text any way you wish. You can use different sizes, fonts (but not symbol fonts!), spacing and alignment. We will give you a limited choice of audio files to choose from, or you can use your own clip with permission from your tutor (the clip must be exactly 60 seconds in length).

To successfully compete the assignment you'll need to complete four steps: listen, research, plan and build.

First, listen to the audio, and when you have selected one you like, research the content (who wrote it, why, when, what does it mean - watch the movie if you haven't) and then plan your a visual interpretation carefully (storyboarding is perfect). Once you have a solid plan build the piece in Motion. Note that working in motion is the last thing you do! Remember, this is all about text, so it needs to be crisp and legible.

This assignment is fundamentally about the relationship of imagery to audio. By keeping the content restricted to text, you will have to focus on movement, colour, form and rhythm to produce a visually compelling work. Because it's simple you also won't need a great deal of skill with the software, so it's a good way to develop your skills. Additionally, the assignment will improve your research skills and broaden your understanding of motion graphics as a visual form.

How you'll be assessed

- Submission of all required items and overall quality of the video and audio: Did the video display artifacts, low resolution fonts or run in a choppy way when accessed from HDD due to high data rate?

• Spelling and grammar - were there accidental typos or spelling errors?

• Did the audio noticeably degrade from the original? Were all the requirements met?

- Creativity and applicability of your interpretation. Did the piece maintain movement and interest during silences?

• How well did the piece represent the characters?

• How well did the piece represent the scene?

• Did the piece do anything unexpected or different to others?
- Relationship between audio and visual elements, including synchronisation and synchresis
- Visual interest of the final piece; remember, you are only allowed use text, but that does not mean the text can't be used creatively ^_^ : How well did they use the available screen space? Does the piece exhibit constant motion?

• Is the piece consistent in its use of colour and font? How visually effective is the typography?

Video requirements:
* Files must be SD, 720HD or Full HD and 25fps
* 16:9 aspect ratio using square pixels.
* AVI or MOV or Mp4 using H.264
* Files must follow the following naming convention: "Lastname_Firstname_StudentID_OptionalTitle"
* Clip is to be between 30-67 seconds.
* File size must be less than 100mb.
* Students MUST provide the MOV/AVI/mp4 file and a their AE file and all of elements used. (You may need to put these in a ZIP file)
