Rutherford’s atomic model failure
- Rutherford proposed that the electrons circulate around the nucleus.
- However according to electromagnetic theory, such circulating electrons should radiate energy continuously.
- If this is so, gradually the electrons will lose energy by circulating in circles of decreasing radii.
- After sometime, they should fall into the nucleus.
- This will lead to the collapse of the atom.
- It is observed that the atom is stable, and it does not collapse.
- Therefore, Rutherford model cannot account for the stability of an atom. Hence it failed.
