Following a strict ethical code will help ensure for a successful learning and growing environment. The core values of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct are the heart of the Early Childhood Education profession (Estes & Krogh, 2012). The core values I chose to discuss are:
- Base our work on knowledge of the how children develop and learn.
- Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family.
- Respect diversity in children and families.
- Recognize that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect.
To base the work I do on the knowledge of how children develop and learn, I would first gain as much knowledge that I can from college classes and workshops to insure that I an completely knowledgeable about the way age group of children that I am working with develop and learn. I would also make sure that all toys and activities are developmentally appropriate for the children in my care. Along with that I would pay close attention to any developmental delays and work closely with that child to make sure they successfully move to the next stage of development.
To support the bond between the child and their family I have open communication with the parents by sending home memos, letters and calendars. I will welcome parents to be involved in out classroom activities as well as send projects home so families can work on them together.
To respect diversity of the children in my classroom and their families I will communicate with parents or caregivers to better understand that families culture or family situation. I would also incorporate activities to help celebrate the different cultures and traditions.
By communicating openly with the families of the children that I work with a trusting relationship can be developed, I would build the trust of my students by being consistent. I would try to be as consistent at possible with routines as well as my attendance. I want my students to feel that they can count on me. By having this type of relationship they will be able to achieve their full potential.
