Routing is the first but the important and difficult task of the production control. Routing means determination of path or route on which manufacturing operators will travel establishing the sequence of operations to be followed in manufacturing a particular product. This route path is determined in advance. Routing has been defined by different authors as follows

Kimball and Kimball has defined the routing as routing is the selection of path or route over which each piece is to travel in being transformed from raw material into finished product.

According to Bethel Walter Smith and Stack man : Fundamentally routing determines what work will be done on a product or part as well as where and how it will be done.

Quoting Spiegel and Lansuburgh : Routing includes the planning of where and by when work shall be done the determination of path that work shall follow and necessary sequence of operations if forms a ground work for most of the scheduling and dispatching functions of planning department.
