For this community assessment, on December 1, 2023, Lincoln Heights Councilwoman Phyllis Jenkins was interviewed.•She illuminated poverty and illiteracy due to her longstanding location and community status.•Jenkins described how community girls had repeated the cycle for 30 years.•She said most families are poor and uneducated.•Their children suffer from this ignorance, making it hard for them to return to school.•Parents work low-paying jobs to survive.•This highlights how important this strategy is to break this pattern and improve Cincinnati's at-risk neighborhoods' health.
