Part I: Reviewing Literature for an Annotated Bibliography

A literature review is a systematic examination of knowledge available on a topic (Dawidowicz, 2010). The keyword in this sentence to me is "available," because it speaks to the fact that information changes almost as quickly as it is consumed. It is important to review literature because it acts as a roadmap for other individuals conducting research. A good review can help to lay a foundation for those who have piqued an interest in specific subjects, or connect the dots for someone finalizing their own research theories. The most important characteristic however, is that it is unbiased, and that any insight you gain into your topic is going to be accurate instead of affected by someone's perspective, personal interests, or agenda (Dawidowicz, 2010).

It cannot be overstated how important it is to include a detailed bibliography of your completed research because it is what gives your research credibility. For example, you wouldn't consult a doctor if you knew they didn't have a medical license. An annotated bibliography works the same way, giving readers assurance that the information they are receiving is legitimate.

Part II: Your Research Question

As a Kindergarten teacher at a low-income school, I am interested in learning more about the connection between turbulent home environments where substance abuse and domestic violence are present and the behaviors, motivations, and learning patterns of students between 5 and 7 years of age. There have been ongoing discussions about the link between childhood trauma and the prevalence of developmental disorders. More specifically, I would like to investigate how children who are exposed to consistent levels of trauma are more prone to developing Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD. According to the Review Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, children who have experienced trauma before the age of 3 have been found to have a higher likelihood of developing autism compared to those who did not experience trauma during this critical period. (Hoover, 2015). Proposing a study on this issue would provide much-needed insight into the multi-level factors that prevent or delay young children from becoming successful learners in the classroom, and would take a deep-dive into how the lack of resources in low-income communities inadvertently contribute to childhood trauma.

Literature enables researchers to place their study within the broader context of existing research (Newhart & Patten, 2023). This aids the researcher in designing the study and helps readers of the research comprehend the methods and rationale behind the study (Newhart & Patten, 2023). Also, literature review offers the reader important background information to comprehend the significance and relevance of the research being proposed or presented. It establishes the scholarly context for the research question and subsequent study (Newhart & Patten, 2023).

A bibliography is a compilation of citations related to a specific topic, including a brief description, summary, and evaluation of each book, article, or other source listed (Memorial University Libraries 2024).

Part II:

Currently, my research focuses on evaluating different e-learning methods, the usability and design of online learning platforms, and the incorporation of new technologies like artificial intelligence and virtual reality in e-learning environments. I am also interested in studying learner engagement, motivation, and retention in online education, as well as the influence of socio-cultural aspects on the success of e-learning adoption.

I am interested by the idea of studying how personalized learning paths can increase engagement and improve learning outcomes in e-learning settings.

With this study proposal, my goal is to enhance e-learning practices using personalized learning technologies and contribute to their advancement. This research is in line with my overall mission to promote accessible, inclusive, and effective digital education solutions that prioritize individual learner needs. Ultimately, the aim is to offer practical insights and recommendations for educators, instructional designers, and e-learning platforms to improve the quality and effectiveness of online education on a global scale.
