President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a "War on Poverty" during his State of the Union Speech in 1964. This speech set in motion a series of bills and acts designed to help even the poorest Americans. Some of these programs included Head Start, food stamps, Medicare and Medicaid. These programs did bring about results which reduced the rates of poverty in the U.S. In general, the living standards of the poor improved measurably. This article focuses on Head Start and SNAP.
