Assignment task:
Watch the opening scene of the film When Harry Met Sally. Begin your viewing at 2:35 and finish it at 14:09. In this scene we start with Harry meeting Sally in Chicago at the University of Chicago and starting their journey to New York together and end with them parting ways at the Washington Square Arch in New York.
In this collection of scenes, Harry and Sally go through all 10 of the stages in Knapp's model relatively in order as presented in the text. Some of the stages are very clear and easy to identify (e.g., Initiating and Terminating), while others are a bit more subtle (e.g. Bonding and Avoiding). While you are watching the scene, take notes of communication behaviors you see that you think fit within each of the stages.
Using your notes, produce a document in which you:
Identify each of the 10 stages and explain them
Identify the specific communication behaviors you see in the portion of the film required for this exercise that you think matches each of the stages of the model.
Provide a brief explanation as to why you think those behaviors match the specific stages.
