Assignment task:
Step 1: Identify a community you are a part of. This can be your neighborhood, a group of people you love working with, your circle of friends-anything you identify as community. Take a minute to describe your community.
Step 2: Brainstorm a list of a 10 digital media technologies you and your community use or consume. Examples include apps you use on a daily basis, websites you frequent, video and audio content, and even ways of consuming art and music online.
Step 3: Pick one digital media technology or digital media content platform from your list that you're interested in further investigating, and write it here:
Step 4: Answer the following questions about the technology you chose. The answers do not have to be long but they should be based on research, and not on personal opinion. You may use books or the internet to help you answer these questions. Some of these questions may be challenging to answer. Think about what the question means to you and answer to the best of your ability.
1. Who owns the technology / digital media content?
2. How are decisions made about the technology / digital media content?
3. Who designs the technology, system, or digital media content?
4. Who is it designed for? Who has the most access to this technology or digital media content?
5. Who has the least access to this technology or digital media content?
6. How are skills and knowledge shared about the technology or digital media content?
Step 5:
Imagine that same technology or digital media content you chose was built for and by your community.
How would it be different? Think about how your community would design that technology or content; then write down what you changed about it, and why.
